Society goes on constant changes as time passes by. With every change comes new challenges we come across and deal with. This is an important matter to consider in organizations in order to thrive and improve their knowledge management strategy, and withstand the changes that come as time goes by. A community’s lifestyle now will not be the same in the next decade, this goes the same with technology which now has become intertwined with how we live our everyday lives. To still be a part of a community’s improvement, organizations should learn to easily pick up on what is new and adapt by implementing it to their knowledge management.

Wendy's X (Twitter) Roasts

One example is the advertising department of Wendy’s, an American fast food chain founded in the late 1960s and are still thriving and very well up to this day due to their adaptability to change. With our lives fully drawn into social media, Wendy’s approached a new strategy of marketing with the use of social media particularly with the then called “Twitter”. It all started in the mid 2010s, with Wendy’s responding to other tweets of well known fast food chains, in a way that gives an impression of them dissing other brands, and later on they began to “roast” other twitter users. At the time, this was seen as an unprofessional move for the company, but ironically, it was an effective strategy for the company as it gained more attention by the mass public and was entertained with the company’s social media activity. This strategy gave a sense of connection to its consumers as they communicated to them in a way we casually communicate to people we know.

Duolingo's Embrace of Memes

Later on, other companies picked up on this strategy. Duolingo, a language learning app created in 2011 gained its popularity in the 2020s when they adapted with the trend on meme culture. Around recently, people had been making memes of their mascot, Duo the Owl, describing him in a menacing perspective where it can harm you if you did not practice a language in a day. This theme in its memes surfaced due to the app's constant reminder in their user’s notifications everyday with the mascot logo attached with a dialogue reminding them as if it was the mascot that is talking to them. The company went on board with it and posted memes of itself on their social media handles, as well as responding to comments as well.

Memes and internet culture is what’s popular in our day and age and has been a part of our everyday lives, even older generations enjoy it. It has reached the point where even corporations and organizations begin to emerge with pop culture in order to stay on top. If we look to it with a mindset from a decade or two ago, we might see their strategy as unprofessional, but it is in fact a very creative and smart strategy for an organization to thrive. Being able to pick up with the current trends helps in gaining new knowledge in your organization, in return contributes to improving your knowledge management strategy which then helps you keep up with the inevitable passing of time.
